Being unable to balance aspirational workplace realities, lack of organisational care, tough working hours, added family responsibilities, nature of hierarchies and work culture are some of the contributing factors leading to physician burnout.

These findings suggest an urgent need to institutionalise appropriate evaluation methods, intervention strategies and feedback mechanisms. 

At the institutional level, mechanisms are to be developed for screening, early identification and peer based support groups especially doctor to doctor self-help groups within and beyond the walls of the hospitals.

For all this to happen, the first thing to be done is recognition and acceptance by our own health professionals that physician burnout is a real burning problem. Hence the urgent need to move away from the notion that individual cases of burnout are ‘weaknesses’ or personal mental health issues. Let’s all join hands to work together and speak the slogan ‘Mind the Mind’.
