As an oral healthcare practitioner, I have seen a rise in the number of patients walking into my clinic and requesting a gorgeous smile. Thanks to the massive reach and influence of digital media, people are much more aware of the latest advances in cosmetic dentistry, and how these techniques can help them look and feel like a million bucks!

I am a staunch advocate of self-care and so I believe it makes perfect sense. After all, it’s 2020 and being confident or healthy isn’t only for celebrities or a privileged few. So I am going to share with you some secret tips and tricks to get that confident and stunning smile.

‘Secret’ transformational veneers

Near-invisible dental veneers are one of the most sought-after procedures to get an instantly fresh and transformed look. These are thin, custom-made ceramic shells designed to be placed on the front surface of the tooth and are customised to suit each person. The veneers give the person a permanently fresh, brighter, whiter smile with better size, shape and tooth colour. Studies state that dental veneers have a huge impact on confidence levels. Dental veneers are currently the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure performed at my clinic, since the results last for a lifetime. They are also extremely popular among celebrities, corporate employees, and business persons.

Natural teeth-whitening

Getting one’s teeth whitened is a common practice before a public appearance or gathering, such as a wedding. It ensures whiter, shinier teeth, and involves applying a special gel on the teeth, followed by a post-procedure whiteness and brightness technique that enhances your smile instantly. If performed right, whitening your teeth can uplift your smile instantly, while causing absolutely no harm to the teeth.

Preventive oral-care consciousness (POCC)

The importance of cultivating POCC through a daily routine of oral hygiene and self care should not be underestimated. Make sure brushing and flossing are a part of your oral hygiene, no matter what! A huge part of cultivating oral hygiene consciousness is also making sure your gum health is optimum. This can be achieved through regular teeth clean-ups. Also I believe that through preventive dentistry we are bringing about impressive change by checking for infections and decay even before they happen. That makes POCC an important emerging field in dentistry.

The ideal diet for white teeth

These are a few tips I give my patients to maintain their teeth, or to take care of themselves after a teeth-whitening procedure:

  • Limit sugar intake to once a day. The more often you have sugar, the greater the acid attack on the teeth. It can cause the teeth to decay and lead to cavities.
  • Avoid excess coffee, red wine or coloured foods that can result in yellowing of the teeth much faster with time, making one’s smile appear dull.
  • Chew on mint and tulsi leaves during the day. This is one of my absolute favourites. These plants have medicinal benefits that kill bacteria, keep your breath fresh and your gums healthy.

Digestion begins in the mouth. Our teeth perform the most important step of chewing and swallowing the food we consume. Without them, irrespective of what healthy foods you eat, the nutrients just wouldn’t get absorbed. In fact, the body discards even the best of food as waste, if it hasn’t been chewed properly. Thus, the biggest secret of achieving a celebrity smile is that zealously protecting your smile has both functional and cosmetic benefits!
