Those were very difficult times...that's the only thing I hear about independence and our fight for it.
Until 2020 all of us have only understood freedom fighting vicariously as one of the hardest lessons from history... through stories of our great grand ones and through history books.

Be it fighting intruders in 1947
Or  up at our borders until 2020.
We never understood what it is to fight every single day every single hour and minute to keep your home and your loved ones safe, Independent to live freely on this land we call India.

But what would freedom be in the year that trapped everyone in fear of death and disaster every step of the way
It was the year with maximum deaths
Never before had we seen such an ocean of humanity lose itself to death to a sneaky disease. Death had become so common, it was merely a number, a tally.

The disease was not the real fear
After a point even death wasn't. It was the fact that you  weren't free to heal your loved ones with the warm touch of your hand, not free to be by their side in their worst and probably last hour.
The tragedy was that even after people passed away their loved ones were not free to hold them tight
This strain was far bigger than what the virus did to our organs...

It was the year of separation in life And unfortunately even when death struck
The year we literally couldn't breathe freely.

2020 we experienced losing our freedom
in an unimaginable sneaky way. Typical of every intrusion ever.

And while this situation is thrust upon us in 2020 and we don't have a choice but to join this fight there are some who choose the above adversities of separation in life and death as their job.

A person who lives and dies in separation unaware of what might be his last breath and unable to even look at his loved ones a last time,
Fighting till their last breath so no one can sneak into our homes and dictate evil terms to us.

In 1947 they were called freedom fighters
In 2020 we  call them soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces

2020 I will celebrate as the year of awakening.Waking up to understanding what it means to be born in a free world
Most of us alive today were born in independent India
These words have not had so much meaning until now but I'm hoping the essence of  independence would be felt in every pulse now that they experienced losing their freedom.

Dear countrymen
It's a fine line
At the border
Between heaven and hell
Our soldiers are the difference
They stand tall, it's heaven
They fall, it will be hell

More strength to our soldiers,
Happy Independence
